A governor in South Carolina has an affair and the standard news media outlets fill the airwaves with information on a man's personal indiscretion. Admittedly, this is a story worth publishing and I am in no way trying to make light of the circumstance. He was wrong, it's news, that's the price of being in the public arena.

Winning is good. Everyone likes to win, including me. At the risk of totally dating myself, I remember a television program that aired when I was very young in the southern California local market called the "Billy Barty Show".

Shakespeare had said, "All the world's a stage and we are all just players on it". There is probably a great deal of truth to that, both for individuals and even as nations on a global scale. Traditionally, the United States played the role cast to the guy with the strong chin and white smile who would ride in to save the damsel tied to the train tracks in the nick of time. It a role we played well because we in America saw ourselves in that light.

I have seen the future of government health care. It is peopled with employees who punch a clock at both ends of a shift and spend the time between waiting for a break. They move slowly through the halls with no sense of urgency looking forward to the 30 minutes they have to eat the lunch they brought from home.

For an administration that continues to claim it doesn't want to run private industry, they sure have a funny way of showing it.

Normally I try to stay with a fairly straight story, provide as many facts as I can along side my own brand of soap-boxing to interject a pithy comment or two for emphasis. The problem with this story is, I just can't stop myself from running ragged all over the turf laid out before me.

Sen. Ted Kennedy unveiled his 651 page National Health Insurance bill on Tuesday, that would change the way insurance works in America. The plan intends to provide coverage to the estimated 50 million Americans currently without coverage. Other House Democratic leaders had an outlined proposal to submit as well, but there are few details concerning it.

The border between Israel and Hamas-controlled territory saw an interesting bit of action today. Apparently, a number of trucks carrying a total of five, explosive laden horses approached the Israeli border and the Palestinian occupants were found planting bombs along the border fence by Israeli infantrymen.

Laura Ling and Euna Lee, two United States journalists arrested in North Korea as spys, have been sentenced to 12 years in a labor prison Monday. The two women, who were reporting the trafficking of women in North Korea, were working for Current TV - a media company led by former Vice President Al Gore. The North Korean court indicated the 12 year sentence, the maximum possible allowed by their laws, was intended to "reform through labor" Ling and Lee.

There are times when I am reminded of a line from the movie, "Rush Hour" with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. The story revolves around a Chinese inspector (Chan) who comes to Los Angeles to investigate a kidnapping. The FBI, not wanting the offered help from the Chinese government, assigns an LAPD detective (Tucker) to keep the inspector distracted.

He is described as the "31-year old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American capitalism" by the New York Times. What could you possibly add to that distinguished introduction of Brian Deese that could possibly make you feel more secure with the future of American automobiles? Here is what you can add:

In thinking through this whole economic meltdown, bailout conundrum, perhaps I have been a bit hasty in rendering judgment upon President Obama. Admittedly, I was wary as our government took that first leap into what appeared to be a bottomless chasm from which no one would recover. But, as I look at the progress we have made and the future on the horizon, I now believe that the economic recovery plan laid out before us just doesn't go far enough.

So, I'm up late teaching myself some new tricks in web design to provide better content when I decide to take a "brain break" and do some light reading from some of the news off the RSS feed. This may not have been my best choice for pure relaxation. If I'd wanted to become this depressed, I could have watched The Deer Hunter and Full Metal Jacket back to back. But, I digress . . .
